Protecting Blair’s Fencing Crawfish

International Paper is committed to sourcing fiber from responsibly managed forests throughout its supply chain. To guide sustainable fiber procurement, the International Paper Fiber Supply team uses ForSite®, the company’s proprietary mapping system. ForSite® integrates environmental, operational, and geographic data to support sourcing decisions for the fiber used to make paper and corrugated boxes.

The value of this system became clear near our Valliant, Oklahoma, Mill, where it prompted proactive measures to protect habitat for Blair’s Fencing Crawfish. The species is native to Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas and is considered a species of conservation interest.

When ForSite® identified an 83-acre tract as potential crawfish habitat, the Fiber Supply team acted. After consulting with the managing forester, the team confirmed that the harvest plan incorporated best management practices designed to minimize potential impacts on the species and its habitat. Specifically, the plan established a streamside management zone (SMZ) buffer along the stream and eliminated stream crossings during harvesting. Together, these measures helped protect sensitive aquatic habitat and maintain water quality throughout the operation.

SMZs help maintain water quality, reduce erosion, and protect habitat for aquatic and riparian species. By expanding the buffer and avoiding stream crossings, the management team limited disturbance in areas most critical to the species while still meeting harvest objectives.

This project shows how International Paper ForSite® helps identify environmental considerations early in the planning process. Combined with on-the-ground forestry expertise, these insights support conservation measures that protect biodiversity and water resources while promoting the long-term sustainability of working forests.
