International Paper volunteers recently spent time where impact matters most, sitting side-by-side with students at LaRose Elementary in Memphis, Tenn., to talk about goals, progress, and what’s possible.

Through the Goal Card Coaching initiative with RISE Memphis, IP volunteers meet with students three times a year to review report cards and discuss the goals students set for themselves at the beginning of the school year. These conversations are simple but powerful by giving students connection, encouragement and motivation as they build confidence in both academics and life skills.

RISE (Realizing Income Stability Empowerment) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families build assets and make informed financial choices. Programs like Goal Card Coaching show how early encouragement and practical education can change long-term outcomes. IP is proud to serve as a Goal Card sponsor, supporting the program through financial contributions and volunteer engagement.

The January session brought an especially strong turnout from the IP volunteers, led by Annette Hawkins, HR Manager, whose leadership energized participation and strengthened the connection between IP and the students.

Marcez Mitchell, Vice Present of Fiber Supply and a member of the RISE Board of Directors, reflected on the broader impact of the partnership:

“As a member of the RISE Board of Directors, I see firsthand the meaningful impact RISE has on our community. I often describe RISE as a ‘well-kept secret,’ because the work they’re doing, especially around financial literacy for those who need it most, is both powerful and deeply needed. The Goal Card coaching initiative is a perfect example. It focuses on our youth, and it reminds us that even small acts of support can create a significant and lasting impact.”

This partnership represents more than 20 years of shared commitment to empowering families through financial literacy and community support.

IP volunteers and students will get back together in April to celebrate growth, reinforce goals, and continue building a future where students feel supported, seen, and capable.
