The integrated Saillat mill produces 95% of its own energy consumption including 85% biomass from the combustion of the by-products of the pulp production process (bark, black liquor, etc). These by-products are burned and then converted into energy and heat. The three chemical elements essential to pulp and paper production – sodium, sulphur and calcium – are recycled.
In addition, since 2001 the Saillat mill has established a partnership with local farmers to convert ash into fertilizer. Every year 9,000 tonnes of ash are recycled to be spread by over 80 local farmers across more than 7,000 hectares. The calcium and potash in the ash improves the quality of the soil. This project has also reduced the amount of waste landfilled in the Saillat mill.
