Health & Safety Excellence
International Paper's dedication and commitment to health & safety excellence is exemplified by our many facilities that have achieved Star status in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) or OSHAS 18001 certification.  Both programs recognize employers and employees who have exemplary programs and performance in occupational safety & health.  At year-end 2003, International Paper had 85 sites certified in these health and safety recognition programs.

Lost Workday Incidence Rate
Our Lost Workday Incidence Rate (LWIR), or rate of injuries and illnesses requiring time away from work, is used to measure our progress towards achievement of an injury and illness-free workplace.  In the simplest terms, the LWIR is the percent of employees that experience an injury or illness requiring time away from work in one year.
