Sustainability: it’s time to set the record straight
27th November 2017
It’s not the most obvious fact, but it’s one we’re keen to share: the paper-making industry makes a valuable contribution to environmental sustainability.
Here at International Paper, we know how important it is to act sustainably. Not only does it protect the precious resources of the world we all live in, it’s also in our own interest as a business; a business that depends on thriving forests. That’s why we’re committed to leading the world in responsible forest stewardship, to ensure healthy and productive forest ecosystems for generations to come.
In the managed forests used by our paper-mills, three to four trees are planted for every tree cut down. What’s more, the dependable marketplace for wood fibre that our business creates ensures that landowners maintain their land as healthy forestland, rather than turning it into development land or selling it for other uses. This all adds up to more forests and more trees - and by using only wood fibre from certified forests, we’re also helping to ensure that responsibly managed forests thrive, whilst illegal logging decreases. It’s also good to know that the young trees planted to keep this cycle going absorb more carbon as they grow than a more mature tree.
For us, sustainability is just good common sense.

More than half of the energy used in European paper mills is carbon neutral.
