Students Gain Practical Experience While learning About River Restoration

Providing a meaningful outdoor learning experience for students was the goal for a partnership between International Paper’s Three Rivers Michigan container plant and Friends of the Rouge, an area non-profit dedicated to the restoration of the Rouge River.
The Rouge Education Project (REP) is a field-based environmental education program that brings the students outdoors and raises the awareness of thousands of Metro Detroit students about where their water comes from. Students monitor the Rouge River watershed and are encouraged to take action to restore and protect the river.
“International Paper’s sponsorship benefited my students by affording them an opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world applications through hands-on experiences that would not otherwise be possible,” says Tracy Ortiz, a science teacher at a Friends of the Rouge adopt-a-school. “The knowledge they gained through this experience will enable them to become more aware of their environment and will instill in them the desire to gain more knowledge about preserving our water resources.”
School Recycling Program Making A Positive Footprint In Riegelwood, North Carolina.
Through the International Paper Foundation, the company supports efforts that help generations appreciate and protect their natural surroundings. School recycling programs provide an environmental learning experience that teaches the basics of recycling to participants. Recycling programs also offer lessons in sustainability, resource conservation and environmental responsibility.
International Paper’s Riegelwood Mill awarded a grant to Keep America Beautiful of New Hanover County to provide recycling bins and collection for multiple schools in North Carolina. The results were tremendous. One school, Mary C. Williams Elementary, achieved 97 percent fullness in their recycling bins, which allowed them to avoid the waste of twelve dumpsters.
