The Augusta mill takes its role as an environmental steward very seriously. Three-quarters of the Augusta Mill's energy requirement is provided by biomass (by-products from the tree - a renewable resource). Biomass is in the form of bark and black liquor- a free fuel by-product created by the pulping process. Purchased electricity, and fossil fuels are used to produce the remaining energy needs. Augusta mill has embraced IP's culture of continuous improvement, which has provided an excellent record of improving its energy efficiency and reducing its environmental footprint from year to year.
The Augusta mill is proud to be certified to Sustainable Forestry Initiative® and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) chain-of-custody standards, which maps our fiber supply chain from the forest to the consumer and allows us to demonstrate accountability to our customers at every step of the process.
Each year, the Augusta mill donates approximately $60,000 to organizations throughout the Central Savannah River Area through charitable giving and the International Paper Foundation. Each year, the mill and its employees support the Miracle Mile Breast Cancer Walk, the Augusta Partnership for Children and United Way of the CSRA, as well as a variety of other community organizations and charities that focus primarily on literacy, environmental education and critical community needs.
