New York, NY - January 27, 2006 - The new Nirvana "With The Lights Out" (Universal Music Group) multi-CD/DVD box set, released on November 23, has been rated the top box set of the holiday season. The box set contains a rare collection of never-released songs and video from the Band’s early days, and is housed in an equally extraordinary package, produced by Shorewood Packaging.
The explosive Nirvana job is a true multi-faceted Shorewood success story. Featuring multiple, unique package enhancements, it involved more than 100 people in five plants to create and produce the components in an incredibly short turn-around time (it’s selling so well, Universal has already reordered it!). In addition to the North American release, Shorewood EPC in the UK has also produced sets of an identical package for Europe. The energy, synergy and passion shown by all involved demonstrates once again Shorewood’s ability to create and produce amazing boutique-level work.
This project was awarded to Shorewood in its infancy – Universal wanted us to be their creative and strategic partner from the start. Shorewood Account Executive Brit Davis went to Universal armed with an arsenal of samples and materials, one of which was loose metal plates featuring all of the different graphic treatment available (The X-Plate by Fenix Metals – see the October 25, 2004 eFlash for more information.) The Universal creative team deemed the metal effect “ingenious,” and the package evolved from that point. A rigid three-fold, four-tray Digipak was selected for the structure of the package. The outer panels feature a “reveal” effect, using thermo-chromatic ink to cover images of original Band tape boxes; the top outer panel is adorned with an X-Plate silk screened with the photo of the Band and a printed and embossed Nirvana logo. Black Kraft liner was chosen for the interior panels which hold shiny black 5-inch CD trays. The inside center panel features a pocket made of coated SBS, printed black on the uncoated side to match the black Kraft liner. The pocket holds a gorgeous 64-page perfect-bound book printed on Bright White uncoated Finch stock.
Kudos to the dedicated Shorewood teams in Harrison and Edison, NJ; Toronto, Canada; Waterbury, CT; and Ebbw Vale, South Wales as well as Brit Davis and Product Development Manager Greg Chup who managed the project. You deserve to be proud and acknowledged for a job VERY WELL done!
