Shorewood's Weaverville Facility Certified as "Star" Safety Site

New York, NY - May 22 2006 - Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, has reported that its manufacturing facility in Weaverville, NC won the coveted "STAR" award from North Carolina Occupational Safety and Heath Agency (OSHNC).  The North Carolina "STAR" is the state's most prestigious safety program, recognizing worksites that are self-sufficient in their ability to control hazards at the worksite.  The Weaverville facility is the first in Buncombe County, NC and the first company within the Shorewood family to gain the "STAR" site certification.  The facility began its application into the state government's elite safety program in December 2003 and received the prestigious "STAR" program flag and plaque on Wednesday, April 12, 2006.

According to Jim Weber, regional EHS manager for Shorewood Packaging, the Weaverville team is a leader in best safety practices within the company's Packaging business.  "The facility's NCSTAR certification is a tribute to the enthusiasm of every Weaverville team member, and shows our commitment to continuous improvement in the area of safety.  It also shows customers and the community that we are committed to maintaining a safe workplace."

Shorewood's Weaverville Facility was awarded "STAR" status after showing OSHNC, during a three-day audit, that they have the expertise to be a world class leader in safety.  The audit report recognized Weaverville for excellence in their Safety Behavior Observation Process.  This elite safety program allows all employees and the State Department of Labor to establish a cooperative relationship in the workplace.  It focuses on leadership commitment and employee involvement in safety, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and effective safety programs.
