As an award-winning dvocate for managing forests for multiple values – including wildlife, recreation, water quality and more - International Paper has supported conservation throughout the company’s history. This has been demonstrated by our groundbreaking and precedent-setting partnerships and agreements.
We’ve played an important role in protection programs for many endangered species like the Red-cockaded Woodpecker. We’ve also assisted in reintroducing species such as the Boulder Darter (a dederally endangered fish) into areas where they had previsously vanished.
We have consistently demonstrated our belief that forests can be managed to balance economic, environmental, recreational and other socially beneficial uses – proving that conservation and working forests are not mutually exclusive. | 
In 2005, International Paper and its partners celebrated the five year anniversary of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker Habitat Conservation Plan. This agreement represented an original approach between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and International Paper to create mutually beneficial links between wildlife conservation and well-managed working forests. Implementation of the agreement has resulted in a dramatic increase in the Red-cockaded Woodpecker population at IP’s Southlands Forest in Bainbridge, Ga., from three male birds in two groups or family units to 50 birds comprising of 15 groups with 13 potential breeding pairs.
